捻木の杉ですが、安珍（あんちん）・清姫（きよひめ）の伝説で「遠くに逃げる安珍の姿を見つけて口惜しさのあまり、清姫が枝をねじ曲げた」といわれます、清姫追っかけて竜になって追うのですがその竜が木に巻き付いた伝説です。
南北朝時代(14世紀)頃より、一般庶民は、まっすぐに長尾坂から潮見峠を越えて滝尻王子へ、そして遥か熊野三山を目指しました。室町時代から明治に至るまで熊野参りや西国巡礼の人々でにぎわい、一時はこの長尾坂を通る「潮見峠越え」がメインコースになったようです。
ここは見晴らしいいです、高尾山も好きですがこっちも好きです。田辺市民ならハイキング感覚で来るのもすごくいいと思います。
グーグルマップ地図ではわかりにくいのですが、車でこのへんまで来れます。あと少し行けば槙山あたりになるので次回はチャレンジしてみたいと思います。
捻木の杉
ここは捻木の杉があるため、捻木または捻木峠と言われ、旅人がよく体息した場所です。捻木の杉は、周囲6m、高さ20mに及ぶ大木で、 昔、奥州の僧安珍を追ってきた清姫が、 田辺の会津の橋を渡っている安珍を見て悔しさの あまり身をよじって杉の木も捻じ曲げてしまい、それがそのまま成長したの がこの木だと言い伝えられています。
根元に祀られているのは、 修験道の開祖役行者です。 ここから横山の山腹をぬって約2km で潮見峠に達します。Nejiki-no-Sugi Cedar Tree
Nejiki or Nejiki-toge pass, is named after this strangely shaped, giant cedar tree (circumference 6m, height 20m) and it is associated with the famous legend of Anchin and Kiyohime from the 10th century.
Anchin was a monk on pilgrim to Kumano when he had a romantic encounter with princess Kiyohime, who lived nearby. He promised to return but didn’t. Kiyohime chased Anchin and from this point saw him off in the distance. She was so furious that her rage twisted the branches of this tree. Eventually she caught up with him at the Dojo-ji temple in Gobo, where Anchin was hiding under the temple bell. Kiyohime’s anger transformed her into a serpent demon and wrapped around the bell, incinerating herself in the process and killing Anchin.
